OOTD: Christmas Lights and Pick'n'Mix

Scarf/Schal: gift/Geschenk; top: C&A; skirt/Rock: H&M; socks/Socken: H&M; shoes/Schuhe: my Dad's garden clogs/Pas Gartenklotschen

This is the result of my just pulling things out of my closet this morning, not really thinking about what to wear. Looking at myself in the mirror I slowly realised that I am wearing plaid, stripes AND polka dots and I thought this was hilarious. The top is by C&A from their range of very affordable basics. Although it doesn't come in my actual size I decided to give this one a go because of its lovely colour - I am much more confident now in experimenting with different sizes.

Yesterday my Dad installed the traditional Christmas lights in our apple tree. This year it didn't really flower, so we had an apple harvest total of ONE apple, which we predictably named Adam. Let's hope next year will be better for lots of apple pies, chutney made from the windfalls, apple bread and apple compote!

This rather chunky cardigan is one of my first projects made from homespun wool / Diese etwas klumpige Strickjacke ist eines der ersten Projekte, die ich jemals aus selbstgesponnener Wolle gestrickt habe

Art Deco Bouquet

It's been ages since I posted a flower update - I suppose because I don't really have the means to buy a lot of flowers at the moment and the garden is almost entirely bare now (apart from the last roses and amazingly the strawberry plants are still producing flowers and even little [greenish] fruit). But today my Mom brought me some beautiful pink and white gerbaras which I put in a vintage alabaster vase. I guess to be truly art deco they should have been lilies but the simple straight lines of the stems remind me of art deco ornaments.

I hope that today somebody gives you something that you really love - maybe a book that you always wanted to read, some chocolates, a kiss, wooly socks ...

Writing Landscapes: Baltic Coast

Me on location
The last 19 days have been quite an experience. Today I finished the first (handwritten) draft of my November novel and I feel as if someone hit me over the head with a shovel.

I really hope that my 212 handwritten pages translate to the 50 000 words that I need to be a successful NaNoWriMo-participant but honestly, I am not sure that I still care about that. Finishing a first draft is always a curious mixture between elation and feelings of loss. So I looked at photographs of the landscape that inspired the original idea for this series of stories and I would like to invite you to take another walk with me: along the Baltic coast in Northern Germany, in the county of Schleswig-Holstein.

Landscapes have always featured heavily in my writing and this one has been the most important of all. It is hilly and sweet, you can find lots of beautiful things on the stony beaches and there are lots and lots of dolmens and prehistoric sites around. Since my first visit I have gone back there almost every year. In summer 2012 my bestie and I went on a camping trip and took a LOT of pictures.

I would love to hear from you: Which landscapes have really inspired you?

OOTD: November Mists and Corduroy

scarf/Schal: thrifted/Secondhand; cardigan: Samoon; dress/Kleid: selfmade/selbstgemacht; socks/Socken: H&M (for men); shoes/Schuhe: Camper

Kolibri-Ohrringe:gift/Geschenk
A few days ago it was exceptionally foggy here in Eastern Westphalia. A perfect opportunity to wear my newest selfmade dress, made from very fine purplish corduroy. I love corduroy and used to wear corduroy flares the whole time (in true nerd fashion) when I was a grumpy teenager.

Later that day I took a walk with a friend of mine who lives in the beautiful hilly district of the "Weserbergland" and made a few more pictures that show the eerie atmosphere of this particular day.

I hope that all of you (whereever you are) are also able to enjoy the beauties of the November landcape!

OOTD: Grey Sky and Knitted Skirt

Cardigan: thrifted/Secondhand; top: H&M; skirt/Rock: handknitted/selbstgestrickt; leg warmers/Stulpen: handknitted/selbstgestrickt; boots/Stiefel: Bluntstone
nail polish/Nagellack:
110 torero
by Alcina Cosmetics
And finally the weather is cool enough so that I can wear the very first thing I made from my homespun grey wool. This skirt is why I bought two kilograms of wool - and ended up using very little of it for the skirt itself. I have knitted other things (like the leg-warmers, my wooly hat or this cardigan) from it for months now. I have lined the skirt with an old grey T-Shirt, this is why it is REALLY warm and I still don't need to wear tights with it.

I love that you can see the various states of the garden in all of those outfit pictures - there are still roses blooming this late in the year [you can see them on the right side of the top image]!

I hope that you experience something surprising today (in a good way) that touches you and makes you think about all the good things and the amazing amounts of beauty that you can find in your life!

Love, Qaroline

Writing Fatigue: In Desperate Need of Tea

Hamish fulfilling his life-long ambition: sweet and cuddly, boys, just sweet and cuddly!

I think I need a lie-down. This is the eighth day of writing my November Novel and I am seriously knackered. I have anticipated that it would not be easy, even if I (theoretically) have the time to do it this month.

I am currently writing about 2200 words a day and type at least one chapter in the evening. I am still determined to see this through, even if I feel raw, irritated and constantly in desperate need of really strong tea.

The thing I love about writing (see Post No. 3: Escape) are the very things that make this regime so difficult to do: You're not just writing - you need to get emotional. All the time. The plot of my November Novel is essentially a very complicated love story between two young men and man, those two can be annoying! I am quite serious: I get annoyed with my characters each day.

I hope that you have your strategies to handle the wet and rainy days to come (e.g. tea or cuddly cats) and if your participating in NaNoWriMo, that you are still able and willing to finish your own November Novel project!

Love, Qaroline

---

Writing Trip: Zutphen & Deventer

dreikant bakery in Zutphen / Bäckerei dreikant in Zutphen

This weekend I went on a little trip to the Netherlands - and spent a lot of the time writing my NaNoWriMo project. I have always loved writing in cafés and luckily my bestie who loves reading or knitting in cafés agreed to put up with my constant scribbling!

Tea-Rose teashop in Deventer / Im Tea-Rose in Deventer

We visited a friend of mine from university who lives with her husband in Deventer and had a lovely weekend chatting, cooking, shopping (too many great shops in Deventer - aaaargh!), drinking tea and watching Doctor Who (ever since I have lived in England I have become a massive fan). Even though the weather was windy, wet and chilly we had a wonderful time and managed to visit Zutphen as well, which is just about 10 kilometers away.

I have lately finished reading the last volume of Virginia Woolf's diary. She visited Zutphen on the 6th of May 1935 (and this was why I wanted to go there in the first place) and writes on this day about the houses she saw in the Netherlands:

Every street is 16th or 17th century, with curved apricot coloured awnings. As we say, the houses are the glory of Holland - the richly carved big windowed houses; some lean a little, others are peaked; but each is a solid spruce perfectly self respecting house, in which last night I saw the Sunday diners, old men old women sitting round with children, cactuses; a cat & a dog.
